Goddess Durga killed Shambasura had increased his life span by following the
teachings of his Guru. He had made the people stop all yagas and yajnas as a
revenge against the 'devas', and this has resulted in drought and scarcity for
years.

Jabaali wanted to put an end to human sufferings and decided to perform a yajna
to please the devas. He requested Devendra to permit him to take Kamadhenu for
the yajna. Devendra asked Jabali to take Kamadhenu's daughter Nandini instead.
Nandini refused to accompany Jabaali to the earth where evil was prominent.

After a lot of arguements, Jabali, in his anger, cursed that she be born as a
river on earth. Realising the mistake, Nandini prayed for mercy. Relenting,
Jabali advised her to pray to Goddess Durga to redeem her from the curse,
Nandini appealed to Goddess Durga who appeared to her and informed her that
though Nandini would be born as a river in fulfillment of the curse she, Durga,
would be born as Nandini's daughter at the center of the river, and in the
process, Nandini would attain purification. On Magha shudda Poornima, Nandini
emerged as a river from Kanakagiri. Jabali performed his yajna. The devas were
pleased and the earth was once again happy.

Elsewhere Arunasura acquired a boon from Brahma that he would not suffer death
from any two legged or four legged being or from any weapon. Brahma also
powered him with Gayatri Mantra. After acquiring these powers, Arunasura
defeated the devas and conquered heaven. The Devas prayed Goddess Durga for
help.

One day Goddess appeared in Arunasura's garden as a beautiful woman. Seeing the
lady, Arunasura approached her. The beautiful lady reminded him that she had
killed Shambasura and from whom Arunasura had escaped death. Arunasura got
angry and tries to kill the woman with sword. The Goddess suddenly turned into
a stone. Arunasura slashed the stone with the sword, then a vast swarm of bees
emerged from the stone and stung him.

The bees (dhumbi) stung him repeatedly till his last breath. Devas led by
Jabali performed abhisheka with tender coconut water and requested the
Bramarambhika (Queen of the bees) to bless the world. Goddess Durga then
appeared in her 'Soumya Roopa' in middle of the river, where present structure
of the temple imparts its glory to the world. 'Kati' being the word which means
'center' (midway between the 'Kanakagiri' the place where the river was born,
and the end, Pravanje, where the river joins the sea) and 'lla' means area.
Thus the place is called 'Kati + lla' Kateel.

<span style="background: white; border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #252122; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0cm; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN; padding: 0cm;">

<span style="background: white; border: 1pt none windowtext; color: #252122; font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-weight: bold; mso-border-alt: none windowtext 0cm; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-IN; padding: 0cm;">The Temple is in the middle of the river Nandini and is known as Shree Durga Parameshwari and <span style="color: #252122; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 16px;">surrounded by panoramic scenes and attractive greeneries. The Train passes through some of the most picturesque hills of the western ghats. The western ghats have some the most beautiful tourist places inside of its deep thick forests and it is a beautiful tourist place near Bangalore. The train pulls up through these ghats chug-chugging along the bridges (more than 100 bridges!!!) and tunnels (more than 50 tunnes!!!). The whole stretch of the railway line passes through a number of such bridges and tunnels. Walking on these bridges is supposed to be the most thrilling part of this trek. You are high up in the hills, walking on the bridge, with ground at more than a 100 ft below your feet. You have nothing to hold on to, and one wrong step could leave you hurling down to the valley below. You have to be really careful and alert. And the tunnels are another story. If the train comes through when you are walking inside a tunnel, all you can do is wedge yourself in the small 4 ft space in between the speeding train and the tunnel wall, as the train brushes past your face. It is a shaky experience.

The history of Shishileshwara temple dates back to 700 years. This place is

Shishileshwara converted tiger and cow into rocks. These rocks are also
worshipped during the annual festival.
This bull guards the outside of the Yoganandeeshwara temple.

Yoganandeeshwara Temple is the dwelling of Shiva the austere on the top of the hills and this temple was built by the Cholas. This antediluvian temple also has a dedication in the name of Sambhaji who was the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

The flora of the hills is distinctive of high hills. Besides Coffea Arabica, there are some more aboriginal species. Eucalyptus is grown inside the fort which is an exotic plant. The forest around the hills acts as a substratum for the condensation of clouds and this is the reason that most of the trees are covered with water in the mornings. Many species of birds and animals can also be seen in the hills.
Since the trip was not meant for trek, people were not ready for it. There is place one could see the falls from a distance. We went to that point and enjoyed the beauty of the falls. The falls looked very similar to Bandaje Arbi falls.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Chelavara is known for its huge waterfall. It viewed from the road itself. There is also a way to get down and to the top of the falls. It is visible from the highway and looks beautiful. Since the driving directions to the falls were known to us from our first visit, we quickly reached the last motorable stretch from where we had to trek down to view the falls. The drive itself is a mesmerizing one, with the greenery around and the narrow and curvy roads. It feels through the drive at every stretch, as though there's something more beautiful in store for us to see! It was a complete feast to our eyes.
The general interest shown by tourists from all over the country is well justified, as Savandurga is one of the largest monolith hills in the entire world. This means that the Savandurga hill is composed entirely of only one rock, which spans a height of about 1226 meters. The monolithic structure is mainly made of basic dykes, granites, gneiss and laterites.

Yet another advantage is the hill’s proximity to the city of Bangalore, which makes it easily accessible. Savandurga has two minor hills, mainly Karigudda and Biligudda. In the local language, Karigudda means Black Hill and Biligudda means White Hill. These two hills comprise the collective hill of Savandurga.

Savandurga is oft visited by tourists because the region has a very famous temple too. This temple, called the Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temple, is located in the foothills of Savandurga. This temple and the Narasimha Swamy temple (also present in the foothills of Savandurga) are two major temples that tourists visiting Savandurga normally swarm to. Savandurga is also an ideal spot for trekking in South India.
